So, you think you’re an expert at crossing the road? Try Vietnam!

When it comes to crossing the road, you’re an expert. You could do it with your eyes closed (that’s probably a bit of an exaggeration). Unless, you are in Vietnam, where everything you know goes out the window.

But how do you cross the street in Vietnam. Basically, there are a couple of cars, a billion motorbikes (and they don’t stop for anything, ok, slight exaggeration). So naturally, this means crossing the road is a little bit difficult. Instead of stopping of slowing down for pedestrians, everyone will just dodge you. It takes a bit of time to get used too.

So here are some handy tips from Footsteps Travel on crossing the road in Vietnam.

Handy Tips on Crossing the Road

  • Approach the road with caution.
  • Take out your phone and film the bikes, cars, buses and cyclists zooming. pass. It will make for a great instagram story.
  • Put your phone back in your pocket. It’s game time.
  • Focus! You will need to gauge your surroundings. Are the 5 bikes zooming up the side walk? Is there a bike going the wrong way? Take your time to figure out what is going on.
  • Keep in mind, that the traffic drives on the other side of the road.
  • When the road is relatively car/bike/bus free – keep in mind that it will never be entirely free of traffic, slowly walk onto the road.
  • DO NOT RUN! Do not stop, and do not walk backwards.
  • The traffic will slow and down and just weave around you.
  • Just keep slowly walking, being aware of your surroundings.
  • Before you know it, you’ll be on the other side
